In a recent interview with Mike Hsu from 100 FM The Pike, ACCEPT’s vocalist Mark Tornillo clarified his earlier comment that “the United States is just not metal territory anymore.” Tornillo explained that his initial remark was made in passing during an interview and was not intended to be derogatory. He elaborated that the financial viability of touring in the U.S. is challenging compared to Europe, South America, and other regions where ACCEPT and similar bands can earn more.
Tornillo highlighted that the U.S. metal scene faces difficulties partly due to the industry’s focus on other genres and trends, which he believes affects metal’s visibility and marketability. He noted that metal bands often play smaller venues in the U.S. unless they collaborate with other major acts or are in the league of bands like METALLICA.
Despite the challenges, Tornillo expressed enthusiasm about ACCEPT’s upcoming U.S. tour with KK’S PRIEST, emphasizing the positive working relationship and camaraderie with the band. He also mentioned that his comment about the U.S. not being “metal territory” was a broad observation rather than a critique, and he was frustrated that headlines, particularly from Blabbermouth, had exaggerated the statement.
Tornillo’s comments from March about the struggles of touring North America due to promoter issues and the need for larger venues to ensure financial success had sparked the original controversy. He reiterated his commitment to performing for fans despite the financial challenges and the need to adapt to the current music landscape.
