Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X recently shared valuable insights into improving guitar skills during a public interview with Guitar Summit. He emphasized the importance of ear training and dedicated practice, offering advice and highlighting common pitfalls to avoid.
Ear Training over Video Tutorials
Phil X stressed that learning by ear is crucial for developing musicality. He cautioned against relying solely on video tutorials, especially those that may contain errors. He recounted an instance where a popular video incorrectly demonstrated Eddie Van Halen’s “Beat It” solo, leading many aspiring guitarists to learn it incorrectly.
“My ear training was learning Aerosmith and AC/DC and ‘Back In Black’ without help. I think that’s more important,” he explained. “It’s not how long you’ve been playing, it’s how much you put into it in that length of time.”
“Conquer the Lick”
Phil X also shared his personal practice technique called “conquer the lick.” This involves challenging himself with complex and unfamiliar licks, refusing to put down the guitar until mastering them. He believes this method not only expands a guitarist’s vocabulary of licks but also enhances their technique and coordination between both hands.
“It got my fingers doing stuff that they couldn’t do prior: left hand, right hand, talking to each other,” he described. “The communication between left and right hand is almost like an art that is lost to some players.”

Phil X observed that many guitarists focus solely on practicing speed and dexterity but neglect the crucial aspect of communication between their hands. He emphasized the importance of developing a seamless connection between fretting and picking hands to achieve precision and avoid sloppiness.
