BRUCE DICKINSON: Why IRON MAIDEN Hasn’t Had Any Lineup Changes In 25 Years

In a recent interview with Stereogum, Bruce Dickinson of IRON MAIDEN discussed the band’s lineup stability since he and Adrian Smith rejoined in 1999. Reflecting on the reasons for this continuity, Dickinson highlighted a shift in the band’s dynamic and personal growth. He mentioned that both he and Smith initially resisted the notion of being viewed as just a single entity rather than individual musicians. This desire for individual recognition played a role in their return to the band.

Dickinson explained that the band’s approach to managing relationships and conflicts has evolved over the years. He noted that the current atmosphere within the band is characterized by more mature and open interactions, which has helped to prevent the sort of resentment that plagued their earlier years. This more respectful and professional attitude has contributed to the band’s ongoing success and stability.

He further elaborated that the band members’ personal connections are largely due to their shared experience in MAIDEN, suggesting that IRON MAIDEN is a unifying force for its members. Despite their diverse backgrounds, the band remains close-knit and committed to their music, which continues to resonate with fans worldwide.

Dickinson also addressed his 2019 decision to rejoin IRON MAIDEN, emphasizing his reluctance to focus solely on nostalgia. He wanted the band to look forward and produce new music, which led to the creation of the acclaimed album *Brave New World* in 2000.

During his hiatus from MAIDEN, the band released albums with Blaze Bayley, which saw a temporary decline in their popularity. Dickinson’s return was marked by a renewed focus on their future and creative output.

Beyond his music career, Dickinson has led a multifaceted life, including roles as a pilot, entrepreneur, and author. His 2017 autobiography, *What Does This Button Do?*, covers his battle with cancer, aiming to raise awareness about the disease. His recent solo album, *The Mandrake Project*, showcases his ongoing creativity and collaboration with long-time producer Roy “Z” Ramirez.
