After Kevin Cronin and the members of REO Speedwagon retired, the group has embarked on a new chapter with a fresh lineup under a different name. Meanwhile, bassist Bruce Hall appears to have his own plans brewing.
Taking to Facebook to reflect on the year, Hall shared a heartfelt New Year’s message filled with gratitude and cherished memories from his time with the band. “2024 blindsided us in ways I never imagined, but I’m eternally grateful for this incredible journey on the Speedwagon. Here’s one of my favorite moments—our families together, a true brotherhood within the band. Don’t think for a second that any of it wasn’t real. Keep loving the music we created because without you, the fans, none of this would’ve been possible. Love to every single one of you. Happy New Year,” he captioned a nostalgic post.
When asked by music journalist Mitch Lafon about the possibility of forming a new version of REO and touring without Cronin, Hall responded candidly, “Mitch, that’s not something I want to do. REO is our band, and Kevin will always be its lead singer. Fans deserve the genuine article, not a tribute act.”
Cronin recently addressed the retirement and the decision to keep performing under a new name: “The name REO Speedwagon is officially retired, but the music and spirit of REO live on through the incredible dedication of Dave Amato, Bryan Hitt, Derek Hilland, Matt Bissonette, and myself.”
The decision to stop touring as REO Speedwagon stemmed from a dispute about Bruce Hall’s return following back surgery in late 2024. While Hall recovered, Matt Bissonette stepped in as bassist, leading to disagreements within the band.
In a recent Facebook comment, Hall clarified his perspective on the situation, countering claims that Cronin was forced to rebrand the band. “Let’s set the record straight. Kevin didn’t start this band, and no one forced him to change the name. He chose to tour with the substitute bassist instead of waiting for my return. The other two owners opposed this, and I was set to rejoin in 2025 after my successful surgery. Kevin made the decision to leave, not us. I’ve been cleared to play since January, and all I ever wanted was to continue touring with the band I love,” Hall explained.
