Grindcore veterans BRUJERIA have announced the cancellation of all their upcoming shows due to an unforeseen medical emergency.
On Monday, September 16, the band shared the following message on social media: “We deeply regret having to cancel all forthcoming tour dates due to a severe medical emergency. We apologize to our fans and will keep you updated as soon as we can. Thank you for your understanding.”
BRUJERIA’s guitarist, Anton Reisenegger, reposted the band’s statement, adding: “Thanks to everyone who reached out with concern. I’m okay, but unfortunately, I can’t share more details at this time.”
This news comes just a few months after the death of longtime vocalist and sampler Ciriaco “Pinche Peach” Quezada in July at the age of 57. The band had recently released their fifth studio album, Esto Es Brujeria, in September 2023 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Reflecting on the band’s origins, BRUJERIA’s frontman, Juan Brujo, mentioned in a 2015 interview with The Moshville Times that the group was initially never intended to tour. “We only wanted to record albums. In the late ’80s in L.A., there was a thriving metal scene, including grind and hardcore. Bands like TERRORIZER were playing backyard shows in Mexican neighborhoods because they couldn’t get into the mainstream clubs. We saw how many Mexicans were in the crowd and thought, ‘Let’s make a band that sings in Spanish, something for them.'”
Brujo recalled how their debut album was hastily recorded with no written material and even a drummer who had never played before. Yet, the reception was immediate. “The day after we recorded, a hardcore guy who didn’t speak Spanish got a BRUJERIA tattoo. Meanwhile, a Mexican fan who spoke no English memorized all the lyrics after hearing the tracks countless times.”
BRUJERIA’s latest lineup also featured Jessica Pimentel, the American actress widely recognized for her role as Maria Ruiz in Orange Is The New Black.
