Cristina Scabbia: ‘Many People Think Metal Is Just Noise’

Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia recently opened up about the common misconceptions surrounding metal music during an interview with Nik Nocturnal. Addressing the stereotypes that have long shadowed the genre, Scabbia shared her thoughts on how metal is often misunderstood. “Many people think that metal is just noise, or that it’s connected to Satanism, or it’s something negative—but they don’t know any better,” she said. “It seems like people are scared of distorted guitars for some reason. They just don’t understand. It’s definitely a lack of music culture in a way.”

Scabbia also highlighted how metal subtly influences mainstream culture, particularly through video games. “I can tell that many kids are playing video games with soundtracks that are clearly metal, and they have no idea it’s metal,” she explained. “So there’s space for it—they love it. But when you tell them it’s metal, they’re surprised because they have this outdated idea of what metal sounds like.”

Nik Nocturnal chimed in, noting that metal has been gaining more visibility in mainstream media. He pointed to notable moments like Gojira’s feature in the 2024 Olympics and Knocked Loose performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!—complete with a pig squeal, something rarely seen on national television. “Musicians today have more confidence to bring metal into bigger spaces because others have already started pushing the limits,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lacuna Coil is gearing up for an exciting year with the release of their new album, ‘Sleepless Empire,’ set to drop on February 14, 2025. The band will embark on a European and UK tour to support the album, with pre-sale tickets available now through their website using the code SLEEPLESS2025. General ticket sales and VIP upgrades will go live on Monday, February 3, at 11 AM local time.
