In a recent episode of AXS TV’s Vinyl Obsession, MEGADETH’s Dave Mustaine discussed his musical inspirations, including the influence of DIAMOND HEAD’s debut album, Lightning To The Nations. Mustaine emphasized how crucial the band was to both METALLICA and MEGADETH, stating that any self-respecting metal fan should recognize DIAMOND HEAD’s significance. He noted how they were once described as the “natural successors to LED ZEPPELIN” in NME, which he considered a major compliment.
Mustaine explained that the difference between American and British songwriting at the time was notable, with British bands like DIAMOND HEAD leaning heavily into riffs instead of chords, which was a key part of their appeal. He admired the repetition of melodic riffs, which, when done well, defined the genre. DIAMOND HEAD’s music was pivotal in shaping the style Mustaine wanted to play, particularly during his time in METALLICA.
He shared that METALLICA covered several DIAMOND HEAD songs, including “Am I Evil?”, “Helpless”, and “The Prince,” often without properly crediting the original band. This led some fans to believe those covers were original METALLICA tracks.
Mustaine also talked about his connection with DIAMOND HEAD guitarist Brian Tatler and expressed admiration for his talent. He highlighted that DIAMOND HEAD was one of the most influential bands from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement. Their impact on both METALLICA and MEGADETH, as well as heavy metal in general, continues to resonate, with Mustaine calling DIAMOND HEAD a massive influence on his music throughout his career.
Tatler has repeatedly expressed gratitude to METALLICA for covering their songs and bringing continued attention to DIAMOND HEAD.
