Deep Purple’s Ian Paice Refuses To Turn Into A ‘Lentil-Eating Hippy’ Even After Mini-Stroke

Ian Paice, legendary drummer of Deep Purple, recently shared insights into how drummers adapt to the physical challenges of live performances as they age. In an interview with The Guardian, Paice reflected on his journey and the adjustments he’s made to continue performing at a high level, even after experiencing a minor stroke.

“Many of the things I found easy when I was much younger are now difficult. But I know a lot more now than when I was younger,” he said, highlighting how experience and wisdom can compensate for physical limitations. Paice explained that adapting his style has been essential: “You substitute things: that is going to be difficult, but I can do that instead. Anybody who thinks they can do exactly the same thing they did 50 years ago is mad. There aren’t many guys of my generation left playing what I call ‘powerful drums.’”

Despite the adjustments, Paice maintains a balanced approach to life, remarking, “I’m not a health fanatic. I haven’t turned into a lentil-eating hippy.”

Deep Purple’s Resilience

Deep Purple, a band with over 50 years of history, has faced speculation about retirement, but they remain committed to continuing. Vocalist Ian Gillan previously dismissed rumors of an imminent farewell tour in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock: “We’re realists. The guys are getting older, and there’s gonna come a point where maybe one or two of us don’t want to do it anymore or (it’s) not physically possible for them to do it. But we don’t think about that. We’re still having a great deal of fun.”

Paice’s adaptability and Gillan’s determination reflect the band’s ethos of embracing change while delivering performances their fans love.
