Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has finally been reunited with his beloved Gibson Marauder guitar, which was stolen from his home back in 2003. Whibley took to Instagram to share the heartfelt story, revealing that the guitar will now join him on the remaining performances of the band’s Tour of the Setting Sun.
A Piece of Sum 41 History
Whibley reflected on the significance of the instrument, saying, “I got this guitar when I was 17 years old. It’s a mid-70s Gibson Marauder. I used it through all the early years of Sum 41—the Half Hour of Power and All Killer No Filler tours. You can see it in the Fat Lip, In Too Deep, and What We’re All About videos.”
The guitar, which holds decades of personal and professional memories, was thought to be lost forever. “In 2003, it was stolen from my house. I thought it was gone forever. It took over 20 years, but I finally got it back. Just in time to use it on this final tour!”
The Journey to Reclaiming the Guitar
After years of hesitation, Whibley decided to take action. “A few months ago, I said f*ck it, I’m gonna find it and try and get this thing back. It took a little bit, but it’s now back where it belongs. The interesting thing was, when I picked it up again after all these years, it just felt like home. Like, no time had passed at all.”
Encouraging fans, Whibley shared a lesson from the experience: “Don’t hesitate. Just f*cking do shit. If you put the effort in, your dreams come true.”
Sum 41’s Final Tour
The iconic pop-punk band’s Tour of the Setting Sun began on February 27, 2024, in Seoul, South Korea, and is set to conclude on January 30, 2025, in Toronto, Canada. Fans can now look forward to seeing Whibley perform with his cherished guitar, adding even more emotional weight to these final shows.
Recent Legal Spotlight
In addition to the guitar reunion, Whibley has been in the headlines for his legal battle against his former manager, whom he has accused of physical and emotional abuse. Despite the challenges, his story of perseverance with the Gibson Marauder reminds fans of the power of determination and nostalgia.
