Developers Accidentally Bulldoze ANGUS and MALCOLM YOUNG’s Childhood Home: ‘We Are Genuinely Sorry For This Oversight’

The house where AC/DC was formed in 1973 has been accidentally demolished, developers have confirmed. Located on Burleigh Street in Sydney’s Inner West, the childhood home of Angus and Malcolm Young—founding members of the legendary rock band—was bulldozed after being purchased by developers in February 2023 for AUD $5.8 million (approximately USD $3.638 million).

The house, a significant pilgrimage site for AC/DC fans, was listed on the National Trust List of Historic Homes in 2013. However, its historical significance was overlooked during the sale and subsequent development plans.

Leon Kmita, general manager of Burwood Square Pty Ltd, expressed deep regret upon learning of the property’s cultural importance after its demolition. In a statement, Kmita said, “On behalf of the team at Burwood Square, I want to convey our heartfelt regret that we have only just learnt of the cultural significance of 4 Burleigh Street, the former home of AC/DC, one of music history’s most iconic bands. We now recognize how deeply this location resonates with the AC/DC community and fans worldwide.”

Kmita explained that due diligence was conducted, including consulting heritage registers, but the connection to AC/DC was not identified. He added, “Unfortunately, the previous long-term owner did not share this vital part of the property’s background with us. We are genuinely sorry for this oversight.”

To honor the band’s legacy, Kmita announced plans to salvage materials from the site to create a commemorative space, potentially a café, bar, or live music venue, where fans can celebrate AC/DC’s enduring impact. The company also intends to collaborate with the Young family, fan groups, and cultural experts to ensure the tribute is respectful and meaningful.

Burwood Council, which had previously acknowledged AC/DC’s connection to the area with a mural, expressed disappointment in a separate statement, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the Young family’s legacy. The council clarified that demolition approval was not granted by them but was authorized under State Government Planning Controls, allowing private certifiers to issue compliance certificates with minimal notice to the council.

The council noted that in 2015, it had proactively engaged heritage specialists to assess the potential significance of the property. Despite their efforts, the house was ultimately demolished, leaving fans and the community saddened by the loss of a key piece of Australia’s rock music history.

Burwood Square Pty Ltd has pledged to make amends and create a lasting tribute to AC/DC, ensuring the band’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
