Down, the New Orleans sludge metal supergroup, is gearing up to release their first full-length album in over a decade. While their last traditional album dates back to 2007, the band released two EPs (Down IV – Part I in 2012 and Part II in 2014) that some fans consider a fragmented album. Regardless of how you count it, it’s been a long wait for fresh material. Considering the packed schedules of Down’s members—drawn from heavyweights like Pantera, Crowbar, Eyehategod, and Corrosion of Conformity—it’s impressive that they’ve found time to create together at all. But the wait seems to be ending, with a new record expected in 2025.
In a recent chat on That Metal Interview podcast (transcribed by Blabbermouth), Crowbar’s Kirk Windstein, who also plays guitar in Down, shared exciting updates:
“I’ve been in DOWN world [for the last few months] kinda, writing with DOWN and finishing up the writing for the album that’s [gonna come] out next year at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.”
This marks a significant moment for fans, especially with vocalist Phil Anselmo currently on the road with the reformed Pantera. Down’s collaborative efforts, even amid their other commitments, feel like a minor miracle.
While no full tour plans have been announced yet, Down has confirmed appearances at two major festivals in 2025: Milwaukee Metal Fest (May 15–18) and Sick New World in Las Vegas (April 25). These performances might pave the way for more dates in support of their upcoming album.
Sludge metal fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming year, and this new Down record could easily become one of 2025’s most anticipated releases.
