Down fans have reason to celebrate as the band is officially back in the studio, working on their first new album in 17 years. Recent photos shared by guitarist Kirk Windstein on Facebook revealed that the follow-up to Down III: Over the Under is in progress, with a release anticipated sometime in 2025.

In a conversation with That Metal Interview, Windstein provided an update on the band’s activities:

“I’ve been in Down world [for the last few months], kinda writing with Down and finishing up the writing for the album that’s [gonna come] out [in 2025] at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.”

This marks a significant moment for the band, who have been relatively quiet in terms of new music for nearly two decades.

The announcement follows their most recent performance at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino in Mescalero, New Mexico, on September 27, 2024. That makeup concert replaced a June date postponed due to wildfires in the area. Notably, Kirk Windstein initially had to sit out the June gigs because of commitments with his other band, Crowbar, with Bobby Landgraf stepping in. Windstein returned for the rescheduled September show.

Looking ahead, Down is gearing up for an exciting 2025. The band will hit the road as part of a tour with Danzig, Cro-Mags, and Abbath starting in March, including a stop at the Milwaukee Metal Fest in May.

Fans can expect a mix of nostalgia and fresh energy as Down reemerges with their highly anticipated new material.
