In a recent interview with Classic Rock History, Blue Öyster Cult’s Eric Bloom shared his thoughts on the band’s standing within the hard rock and heavy metal communities.

When asked how he feels about the recognition they’ve received over the years, Bloom responded candidly, “I don’t know. That’s a tough question. I’m perfectly satisfied with whatever notoriety we have.”

He went on to say, “It’s nice to be able to walk down the street and have people not recognize me; I’m perfectly happy with that. And it’s better than the other way around.”

Blue Öyster Cult, a staple of the rock scene since the late 1960s, released their sixteenth and final studio album, Ghost Stories, on April 12, 2024. Last year, guitarist Buck Dharma spoke with Goldmine about the future of the band’s recording efforts.

“At this moment, we’re not planning to do any more recording, but that could change,” Dharma revealed. “As far as live shows, we’re committed to 2024; we’ll probably do between 20 and 30 shows. We haven’t committed to anything in ’25 yet. Eric and I are getting old, and I’m just wondering if I’ll ever do anything else but get up and play. Because that’s basically what I’ve done for 50-odd years.”

In another interview with Ultimate Guitar, Dharma reflected on their shift from heavy touring: “I think we’re throttling back from the years of heavy touring. Eric and I are getting on in years, and we just want to do it at a more comfortable pace.”

He added, “We’re still booking shows in ’24. I haven’t thought about ’25 yet. But it could go on as long as we can do it. I can still play and sing, I still enjoy it. I don’t much like the grind of tour traveling. But other than that, it’s great to have a job that I can still do, and have been doing it for 50 years.”

Blue Öyster Cult has three upcoming shows scheduled for February, with performances set for Sarasota, Florida on February 14, followed by two dates in Texas on February 16 and 17.
