In a candid conversation with Shawn Ratches of Laughingmonkeymusic, Erik Grönwall reflected on his difficult decision to leave Skid Row less than a year after joining the band.

“It was a really, really tough decision,” Grönwall admitted, explaining that stepping away was necessary for personal and health reasons. “If I could have stayed in the band, I would. But to respect the guy who went through everything I’ve been through and to honor my own values, I had to make that decision. It was the right decision, but it wasn’t easy.”

The singer revealed that his health concerns and the band’s demanding touring schedule were central to his departure. Grönwall had proposed a more manageable schedule of three weeks on tour followed by a month off, but the plan didn’t align with the band’s needs. “I can’t speak for them,” he said. “I gave them a proposal I thought would work for me, but it didn’t fit their plans. They’ve been doing this for a long time, and they know what works for them.”

Grönwall’s health has been a significant factor in his career decisions. After undergoing intensive treatment for leukemia, he required regular checkups to monitor his recovery. Reflecting on his time with Skid Row, he shared, “When I was with the band, I had monthly blood checkups in Sweden, then every three months. Now it’s every six months, which makes things easier.”

Despite his departure, Grönwall spoke positively about his experience with Skid Row, emphasizing the mutual effort to find a solution. “I feel saddened we ended up here, but we really tried. At the end of the day, everyone has to do what’s best for them.”

While the rigorous touring schedule proved too taxing, Grönwall expressed gratitude for the opportunity and respect for the band’s legacy. “They’ve been doing this since before I was born,” he said. “They’ve always found a way to come back, and I know they’ll continue to do so.”

Looking ahead, Erik Grönwall is preparing to tour Europe with Michael Schenker, marking a new chapter in his career. As he balances his health and passion for music, fans can look forward to seeing him continue to shine on stage.
