Brazilian guitarist Kiko Loureiro, renowned for his work with MEGADETH and ANGRA, has unveiled his latest solo single, “Mind Rise.” You can check it out below.
Kiko describes the track as a refreshing return to basics after years of performing in large arenas and festivals. He explains, “The song features catchy, straightforward guitar riffs that center around a deep, lower-register pentatonic scale, immediately drawing in the listener. I envision the verse as a blend of Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck, with fluid lines where subtle variations in note play create a significant impact. As the saying goes, ‘The devil is in the details,’ and those details shape the vibe of the track.”
He elaborates on the composition: “The song begins in E minor, a staple key in rock guitar. Just as it feels familiar, it transitions into G major, lifting the mood and adding a sense of elevation. This dynamic interplay keeps the listener engaged without complicating the structure. Instead of a traditional chorus, the piece revolves around a strong, recurring guitar riff. There’s a sense of suspense, akin to a shadowy figure in a smoky bar, waiting for the right moment to strike. This tension is enhanced by a Neapolitan chord, a classical technique that builds anticipation for the solo, which echoes the main melody under a different chord progression. Ultimately, repetition weaves everything together, reinforcing the idea that music doesn’t have to be complex—sometimes, a simple riff leaves the most lasting impression.”
“Listen closely, and let me know your thoughts on the track,” Kiko invites.
Earlier this month, he released another single, “Out Of Nothing,” sharing that it emerged organically from the creative process. “When I compose, I let my hands guide me over the fretboard, discovering paths and chasing the feeling that resonates,” he explains. “This track kicks off with a bold tritone interval—‘Diabolus In Musica’—known for its tension, and shifts keys to set up a dynamic riff alternating between A and D. The intensity builds with rapid 16th notes, launching the track into high gear.
