In a recent interview with TribLIVE.com, Blöthar The Berserker discussed what sets GWAR apart from bands like Slayer and Incubus. “GWAR is truly original; it stands out in a way that people recognize,” he stated, emphasizing the band’s unique appeal. He noted, “It’s definitely fun to watch, which is a key ingredient of our performances.”
Blöthar compared GWAR’s entertainment value to other bands, recalling that his wife found a recent Coheed and Cambria and Incubus show boring. “GWAR is anything but boring. We’re entertaining and funny,” he explained. He observed that while Slayer fans might smile during their shows, GWAR audiences are exuberant and fully engaged, having the time of their lives.
Describing GWAR, he said, “We’re a theatrical heavy metal rock ‘n’ roll performance art band.” He elaborated on their backstory as intergalactic space aliens who were exiled to Earth and became rock stars. “We hang out here, mess up, and play rock music,” he quipped.
Blöthar believes GWAR resonates with outcasts and those questioning their place in the world. He added that the band’s creative energy appeals to fans of low art, celebrating fun elements like comic books and horror movies.
GWAR recently announced their The Stoned Age US tour for Fall 2024, featuring support from Dark Funeral, Squid Pisser, and Cancer Bats, kicking off on October 17 in Las Vegas and concluding on November 20 in Nashville.
