Jacoby Shaddix reacted to a video of Christmas carolers covering Papa Roach’s iconic song Last Resort on Instagram.
The post featured a video of Shaddix listening to the carolers, with the caption: “Finish the lyrics, holiday theme only… ‘CUT MY LIFE INTO PIECES…’ Drop them in the comments. What you got?! We will pin the best! Remix with Quinton O’Reilly.” His facial expression in the video suggested he was slightly annoyed by the unexpected holiday version of the song.
Fans had a blast responding to the challenge, with some creative holiday-themed lyrics. One fan wrote, “Cut my life into pieces, where is that Santa Claus? Still got cookies, none eaten, don’t really think that that sleigh is leaving.” Another fan came up with, “Cut my life into pieces, this is my Christmas wrap! Suffocation of ribbons, no breathing under Santa’s cap. Don’t give a gift if I don’t unwrap it!” A third fan added a bit more of the song’s raw emotion: “This is my last resort. Can’t deny what I’m seeing. Salvation is breathing. Purchased with crucified bleeding. Just like my song’s lyrics. Sent it to ya! Merry CHRISTmas!”
Last Resort was Papa Roach’s breakthrough single, first appearing on the soundtrack of the 2000 film Ready to Rumble before being included on their second album, Infest. The song was later covered by Falling In Reverse in 2023.
In a 2023 interview with 94 Rocks KFML, Shaddix shared his thoughts on Falling In Reverse’s cover, revealing that they had reached out to Ronnie Radke about reimagining the song a few years prior. “We hit up a few different artists about, ‘Hey, we wanna do a re-imagination of Last Resort,’” he explained. “Ronnie was all about it, and a few months later, he told me he had something special for it. I was excited to hear it.”
When Shaddix finally listened to the cover, he was visibly moved. “He came to my dressing room on the first day of tour and played it for me,” Jacoby recalled. “I had goosebumps. He tapped into the raw emotion of the lyrics and made it something special, really made it his own.”
Last Resort has been deeply meaningful to many fans, as its lyrics speak to the struggles of life and feelings of hopelessness. Papa Roach bassist Tobin Esperance explained to Songfacts that the song was inspired by a friend going through tough times, and its honest, emotional message has resonated with many who have faced similar battles.
