Joey Belladonna has returned to Los Angeles to resume recording his vocal tracks for ANTHRAX’s highly anticipated new studio album. This new project, overseen by producer Jay Ruston, who previously worked with the band on “For All Kings” (2016) and “Worship Music” (2011), follows the band’s last studio release and marks their next major step in the evolution of their sound.
In a recent Instagram video, Belladonna excitedly shared his return to LA and his plans to dive back into the studio, stating: “Yeah, I just got into L.A. today. Tomorrow I’m gonna start singing, start slamming away at the record again, and hopefully finish. And looking forward to it. And I hope you guys are getting ready for that. Thank you. Peace, baby.” The post, which was accompanied by the caption, “Hey everyone! Currently out in LA recording tracks for the new album. The video quality isn’t the best, but I just wanted to check in and say a quick hello before diving into the studio. Can’t wait for you all to hear what we’re working on! #Anthrax #HeavyMetal #Metal #ThrashMetal #MetalHead #RocknRoll #NewMusic #StudioVibes #LARecording #AlbumInTheWorks,” reflects Belladonna’s enthusiasm and anticipation for the upcoming release.
Guitarist Scott Ian recently discussed the album’s progress in an interview with Jon Wiederhorn of Guitar World magazine. He revealed that the band is taking their time to ensure the new album meets their high standards. “We’re taking our time and not rushing anything because we want it to be exactly how we want it,” Ian explained. He noted that their current approach is different from their earlier, more rushed recording processes due to personal commitments and responsibilities.
Ian hinted at the musical direction of the new material, saying, “There are crushing riffs and great, hooky choruses. Even some of the thrashiest songs have great choruses. We’re always looking for the hook, and I think we’ve accomplished that.” He added that the band has crafted a mix of thrashier and more diverse songs, aiming for a record that will “punch people in the face.”
Drummer Charlie Benante also shared some insights into the album’s content. He described a song with an epic feel similar to “In The End” from “Worship Music” and “Blood Eagle Wings” from “For All Kings.” He also mentioned that there are tracks with a unique sound, including one called “The Edge Of Perfection,” which he’s been holding onto since before the COVID pandemic.
ANTHRAX, formed in 1981 by Scott Ian and Dan Lilker in Queens, New York, celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2021. Over the decades, they have become a seminal force in thrash metal, alongside METALLICA, SLAYER, and MEGADETH. With 11 studio albums, multiple gold and platinum certifications, and a history of landmark tours, including headlining Madison Square Garden and performing at Yankee Stadium with the “Big Four,” ANTHRAX remains a pivotal band in the genre.
Their last album, “For All Kings,” was lauded by critics as one of their strongest releases to date. It followed a rejuvenation period for the band, marked by their inclusion in the “Big Four” tour and the release of “Worship Music.” Fans can expect more powerful and resonant material as ANTHRAX prepares to unveil their new record, projected for an early 2025 release.
