JOURNEY’s lead vocalist, Arnel Pineda, has expressed gratitude to his fans following backlash over his performance at the Rock In Rio festival in Rio de Janeiro on September 15.
In a recent social media update, the 57-year-old singer, who has been with JOURNEY since 2007 after being discovered by guitarist Neal Schon on YouTube, shared a video highlighting his struggles with ear monitors during the show, which affected his ability to hit the right notes. Feeling “devastated” by the performance, he even proposed to step away from the band if fans voted for it.
“Here’s the deal: I’m giving you a chance to voice your opinion. Text GO if you want me to leave, or STAY if you want me to continue. If GO hits 1 million, I’ll walk away for good. Are you in?” Pineda wrote.
Schon rallied behind Pineda in a Facebook post, criticizing AVENGED SEVENFOLD, who played later that night, for compromising JOURNEY’s sound. He also denounced certain blogs for misrepresenting the situation. Drummer Deen Castronovo defended Pineda as well, emphasizing the challenges of performing consistently and the unpredictable nature of the human voice.
On September 25, Arnel shared a heartfelt video message addressing fans. “I apologize for any inconvenience I’ve caused JOURNEY’s loyal supporters. I recognize the band is facing challenges, but I believe in the goodness that still exists in this world,” he stated. Pineda acknowledged the negativity he’s faced since joining the band but was uplifted by the kindness and support he received from true fans.
Reflecting on the comments he read, he expressed appreciation for the overwhelming positivity that countered the hatred. He thanked those who defended him, highlighting the importance of choosing goodness over negativity in everyday life. “Let’s continue to embrace kindness,” he concluded, sending love to his supporters worldwide.
Pineda’s journey from a bar singer in Manila to the frontman of a legendary rock band is nothing short of inspiring. Discovered through a YouTube video, he stepped into the spotlight after several transitions in the band’s lineup. Despite initial criticism regarding his ethnicity and vocal style, he has proven himself an integral part of JOURNEY, even sharing the stage with former lead singer Steve Perry at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2017.
Throughout his life, Pineda has overcome significant hardships, including the loss of his mother, homelessness, and poverty. He remains committed to giving back, actively working to combat poverty and inspire youth in the Philippines.
