In a recent appearance on the Everblack Podcast, Brian “Head” Welch opened up about his deep appreciation for his Korn bandmate, Jonathan Davis, and the unique impact he has had on the band’s sound. Welch praised Davis for his distinctive voice and the emotional depth he brings to Korn’s music.

“You throw that freaky, unique, strange, amazing voice and character into what we’re doing, and he makes it Korn,” Welch said, emphasizing Davis’ integral role in shaping the band’s identity. “He helps make Korn unique.”

Welch acknowledged the contributions of all the band members, highlighting that the signature Korn sound comes from the combination of their individual instruments. However, it’s Davis’ vocal style, which includes unconventional elements like scatting, that sets the band apart. “He never rapped once. He does a scat thing. He likes to do things that no one’s doing,” Welch added, reflecting on Davis’ willingness to experiment with his voice in ways no one else in rock music was doing at the time.

The guitarist also discussed how Davis’ vulnerability and openness to share his emotions in his lyrics played a key role in the band’s success, particularly on their groundbreaking debut album. “There was just something special about him [Davis] and how he got so vulnerable and open to share his emotions,” Welch said. “You could feel his soul, and I don’t know who was doing that before him to that level.”

He cited other artists like Layne Staley of Alice in Chains and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails as pioneers of emotional expression in rock, but noted that Davis brought a rawness to his work that stood out in the scene. “People obviously opened the door, like Layne and maybe Trent Reznor, I don’t know. But to do it in a way that was just so emotional, and that was before bands like Linkin Park. I’m grateful for Jonathan Davis,” he explained.

Jonathan Davis has also expressed his gratitude toward his Korn bandmates. In October, he shared a heartfelt post on Instagram to commemorate the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. Reflecting on the record’s profound impact, he shared how it marked a turning point in his life. “I remember my 24-year-old self so nervous that I had opened my heart for the world to feel the pain I was going through at that time,” Davis wrote.

He thanked producer Ross Robinson for capturing the raw emotion in his voice and the tension he felt while recording, and expressed his deep gratitude to his bandmates. “My brothers, James Shaffer, Brian Welch, Reginald Arvizu, David Silveria, you guys gave me the most incredible music to do what I do. You guys made me feel safe and I’m forever grateful,” Davis wrote.

As for new music, Welch recently shared that Korn has been working on a new album, though he doesn’t expect it to be released anytime soon. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next chapter from the legendary band.
