Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda recently opened up about his past dislike for Metallica fans during his high school days. In an interview with Complex, he recounted how music preferences created a divide between social groups.

“Hip-Hop Kids vs. Rock Kids”

Shinoda described a clear separation between those who listened to hip-hop and those who preferred rock music, particularly Metallica. He admitted that there was a sense of animosity between the groups, although it didn’t escalate beyond lighthearted teasing and avoiding each other’s company.

“My friends at my table, we were hip-hop kids and that’s what we listen to and there were some kids who were rock kids and they sat at a different table. They were Metallica kids and we hated each other, just on the music,” Shinoda recalled.

Bridging the Gap Through Music

Shinoda’s perspective shifted as he discovered artists who blended different genres. He cited the Beastie Boys’ use of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix samples as an early example of this fusion. He also mentioned the “Judgment Night” soundtrack, which featured collaborations between rock and hip-hop artists like Helmet and House of Pain.

“Eventually, I just naturally heard things that were bridges, that were connectors,” he explained. “I was like, ‘This is it, man.’ I love whatever this is. These guys like what I like.”

These experiences helped Shinoda realize the potential for blending genres and appreciate the diversity within music. He acknowledged that there are countless ways to combine different styles, ultimately leading him to embrace a broader musical palette.

This anecdote from Shinoda’s past highlights how music can both unite and divide people. While initially serving as a source of friction, music ultimately played a crucial role in expanding his horizons and fostering an appreciation for diverse genres.
