LYNYRD SKYNYRD has canceled multiple concerts due to a “sudden emergency illness” affecting singer Johnny Van Zant. The band announced that they had to cancel their show on September 24 in Anchorage, Alaska, after Van Zant learned that his daughter was undergoing emergency surgery.
Following this, they called off four additional shows, including performances in West Valley, Utah (September 26), Loveland, Colorado (September 27), Colorado Springs, Colorado (September 28), and Albuquerque, New Mexico (September 29). The band stated that Van Zant had left the tour to support his daughter during her medical challenges.
In recent interviews, guitarist Rickey Medlocke mentioned plans for a new LYNYRD SKYNYRD album, intended as a tribute to the late guitarist Gary Rossington. If this album comes to fruition, it would be the band’s first since 2012’s “Last Of A Dyin’ Breed.” The group released a single, “Last Of The Street Survivors,” in 2020, which reflected on their legacy and the loss of bandmates.
Medlocke has defended the band’s decision to continue performing, emphasizing their deep connection to the music and its history, stating that no tribute band can hold the significance that they do. Rossington, who passed away on March 5, 2023, was the last surviving founding member of the group, and his influence continues to resonate within the band.
