The new documentary Marilyn Manson: Unmasked, directed by Karen McGann, has sparked discussion around Manson’s rise to fame and the allegations against him. In a recent interview with NME, McGann reflected on Manson’s influence and the devotion he inspired among his fans. When asked if Manson could be considered a cult leader, McGann described him as having a “cult-like” ability to draw extraordinary loyalty, likening his charisma to something “messianic.” She noted, “He’s a smart individual and understood that he could represent something to people who felt underrepresented or disenfranchised.”

The documentary follows a controversial path, highlighting Manson’s rise to fame in the 1990s South Florida rock scene and the darker allegations that followed. In the first episode, fans, including Jennifer Pavao, recount the allure of Manson’s charisma and the almost obsessive loyalty he cultivated. Pavao, who was underage at the time of her interactions with Manson, reflected on how her perception of him has changed, comparing the dynamic to “Charles Manson and his family.”

The second episode delves into accusations made by Manson’s ex-partner, Evan Rachel Wood, who first came forward in 2021, naming Manson—real name Brian Warner—as her abuser. Wood detailed her experiences of psychological manipulation and abuse during their relationship, which began when she was 18 and he was in his 30s. She described feeling psychologically dependent on Manson, who she said exhibited “at least three different versions” of himself. Her allegations, shared on Instagram, significantly impacted Manson’s career, resulting in the loss of his label and booking agent.

McGann’s documentary is the second in a Channel 4 series investigating high-profile male celebrities accused of predatory behavior, following a series about Russell Brand. As Marilyn Manson: Unmasked unfolds, it sheds light on the troubling dynamics of Manson’s relationships with fans and partners, providing a critical examination of his legacy.

The documentary is available for streaming on platforms such as Paramount Plus, Paramount+ Amazon Channel, and the Paramount Plus Apple TV Channel.
