Mark Tremonti: Frank Sinatra Suits Me Better Than Rock

Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti has found a new creative outlet that deeply resonates with him: performing Frank Sinatra’s timeless classics. In a recent interview with 95.5 KLOS, Tremonti opened up about how this unexpected project came to life and why it holds such a special place in his heart.

Discovering His Voice Through Sinatra

Tremonti admitted that his Sinatra-inspired performances feel more natural to him vocally than the rock music he’s known for:
“It all came from me singing at Christmas parties. I got a buddy who has a karaoke stage, and we’d sing Christmas songs. I’m like, ‘You know what? I sing these songs better than I sing rock stuff,’” he said. “It just suits my voice better.”

He also revealed that performing Sinatra’s music has become his favorite experience as a musician:
“These are my favorite shows to perform out of all of my bands. I love doing the Sinatra shows. Even though they’re not my songs, they feel very personal to me.”

A Mission for His Daughter

What makes the project even more meaningful is its purpose: raising funds and awareness for the National Down Syndrome Society. Tremonti’s daughter, who has Down syndrome, was his inspiration:
“My daughter has Down syndrome, and now it’s my life’s mission to spread awareness and raise funds and do all I can to try to be a good human being, to do the best I can for my daughter and folks like her.”

The stars aligned perfectly for Tremonti to bring this project to life, recording the album with former members of Sinatra’s band and releasing it on May 27, 2022.

Performing with Sinatra’s Band

Despite initial warnings about the challenge of stepping into Sinatra’s world, Tremonti embraced the opportunity with excitement rather than fear:
“Everybody was telling me, ‘Aren’t you nervous as hell? Are you terrified to go in there and sing with Frank Sinatra’s band?’ … But I wasn’t nervous. I was excited to do it because I couldn’t have practiced another minute to do this thing. And what’s somebody going to say? ‘You did a bad job raising money for charity.’”

Overcoming the Challenges of Sinatra’s Style

Tremonti spoke about the difficulty of replicating Sinatra’s unique vocal phrasing:
“Sinatra never sang a song the same way twice. He approached vocals almost like a trombone player would approach his instrument. It seems like Sinatra was trying to show that his voice was an ever-evolving instrument.”

One of the most challenging tracks for him to record was Nancy with the Laughing Face, but he pushed through with determination.

Finding Joy in the Journey

For Tremonti, this project is more than just a tribute to an iconic artist; it’s a deeply personal journey filled with purpose, love, and artistic growth. His Sinatra performances have become his “happy place,” blending his passion for music with his dedication to making a difference.
