Mastodon and Lamb of God have teamed up to release their new single, “Floods of Triton,” on September 12. The track was recorded at Maston’s West End Sound studio in Atlanta just before they kicked off their much-anticipated “Ashes of Leviathan” tour. Notably, the song was produced by Tyler Bates, known for his work on film scores for “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “John Wick.”
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mastodon’s drummer Brann Dailor reflected on the collaboration, emphasizing their desire to create more joint projects. “We had the tour coming up, so [Lamb of God] were at the forefront of my mind,” he shared. He noted that the core riffs of “Floods of Triton” had been around since 2006, coinciding with the first time their two bands toured together. Dailor expressed excitement about having Randy Blythe’s vocals complement the track, aiming to deepen the friendship between the bands.
Blythe revealed that he contributed around 80% of the lyrics, collaborating closely with Mastodon’s Troy Sanders. The frontman explained that the song’s structure was developed organically in the studio, highlighting a true spirit of collaboration. He cited lines like “See beauty in destruction” and “The sea beast laid to rest,” intertwining references from both bands’ discographies.
The release of “Floods of Triton” coincided with the conclusion of their “Ashes of Leviathan” tour, which celebrated the 20th anniversaries of Mastodon’s Leviathan and Lamb of God’s Ashes of the Wake, both released in 2004.
