Mikael Åkerfeldt Says He Became Vocalist for Opeth Because ‘Nobody Else Wanted to Do It’

Metal vocalists might not be the usual suspects on *The Voice*, but many have voices that could rival those of the best blues, R&B, or soul singers. While some metal bands have singers who might not be technically exceptional (coughDaveMustainecough), there are legends like Ronnie James Dio, who had an impressive vocal range of over four octaves. Perhaps it’s time for a metal coach to join *The Voice*—maybe someone like Sebastian Bach, if he’s not too busy.

Despite Opeth being hailed as one of the greatest progressive metal bands, their vocalist, Mikael Åkerfeldt, doesn’t view himself as a standout singer. In a recent interview with Finnish outlet Chaoszine, transcribed by Blabbermouth, Åkerfeldt shared that he doesn’t think much of his vocal abilities and ended up as the band’s vocalist almost by default. It’s a humbling perspective from someone who’s a key figure in progressive metal.
