Mike Portnoy Explains Why He Can’t Replace Nicko McBrain In Iron Maiden

Mike Portnoy isn’t convinced he’s “British enough” to fill Nicko McBrain’s shoes as Iron Maiden’s drummer after McBrain’s recent retirement.

Speaking with Metal Pilgrim, the Dream Theater drummer addressed the idea of stepping into the legendary role, calling it “such a hypothetical scenario.” Portnoy acknowledged, “On the surface, of course — they’re one of the biggest bands in the world and one of my favorite bands in the world.” However, he was quick to point out why the idea seems unlikely.

“They’re such a traditionally British band that I don’t think in a million years they’d have someone who wasn’t English,” Portnoy explained. “Unless I changed my nationality, it’s just not a realistic question.”

Nicko McBrain, who retired last month after 42 years with the band, played his final show with Iron Maiden on December 7 in São Paulo, Brazil. The moment was marked by tributes, with Bruce Dickinson calling it a celebration of McBrain’s incredible legacy.

Portnoy, a longtime fan and friend of McBrain, shared heartfelt words on social media upon hearing the news of his retirement. “Shocked to hear the announcement of Nicko McBrain’s retirement from touring with Iron Maiden,” he wrote, alongside several photos of the two drummers together. “I wish my friend all the best in his retirement… thanks for all the years of music and friendship. You’re the best, Nicko.”

As Iron Maiden prepares for their 2025 Run For Your Lives tour, which kicks off May 27 in Budapest, Simon Dawson has been announced as the band’s new drummer. McBrain’s departure marks the end of an era, but his contributions will remain a cornerstone of Iron Maiden’s legacy.
