Mikkey Dee recently opened up about his harrowing battle with sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to infection. In a heartfelt Facebook post, he reflected on his three-week hospital stay and the journey to recovery.
“First, I want to thank everyone for the wonderful Christmas and New Year’s greetings, which I sadly couldn’t respond to this time. I always try to, but this holiday season was different,” Dee shared. “I was hospitalized due to a severe blood infection—sepsis. After three weeks in the hospital, I’m finally home, fighting this nasty bacteria. I’m deeply grateful to the incredible team at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg for their exceptional care. Huge thanks to all the doctors and nurses who looked after me so well.”
Dee revealed that his recovery included multiple surgeries but shared optimistic news: “The numbers are all heading in the right direction, though I still have a long road of rehab and recovery ahead. I’m giving 100% to get back on the drum stool for our Las Vegas residency kicking off February 27.”
The drummer expressed his excitement for what lies ahead: “We’ve got an amazing 2025 planned, celebrating Scorpions’ 60th anniversary and bringing rock to fans around the world. The Stinger is out, and I can’t wait to see you all out there, rocking harder than ever. Wishing everyone a fantastic 2025 filled with good health and Rock ‘n’ Roll!”
In a separate interview with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Dee recounted how his condition developed unexpectedly after he sprained his ankle in December. Despite the pain, he pushed through performances at Christmas shows with the help of medication. However, things took a serious turn.
“The ankle swelled up like crazy, looking distorted and inflamed—almost like an overcooked ham. I became very ill and had to be rushed to Sahlgrenska by ambulance,” Dee recalled. “There, they found alarming numbers and prioritized me immediately. I had surgery right away—the first of three—to remove dead and infected tissue. Another day without intervention, and I’d be drumming alongside Lemmy [Kilmister] in heaven.”
Mikkey Dee is determined to be back in action for Scorpions’ highly anticipated Las Vegas residency, starting February 27, 2025, at PH Live at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. The shows will also feature Buckcherry as special guests, marking an unforgettable celebration of Scorpions’ legendary career.
