MUDVAYNE’s CHAD GRAY Says MÖTLEY CRÜE Should ‘Just Bow Out’ At This Point: ‘It’s Hard For Me To Watch’

In a recent interview with The Jesea Lee Show, MUDVAYNE frontman Chad Gray reflected on his early musical influences and his thoughts on MÖTLEY CRÜE’s evolving lineup. Gray mentioned that MÖTLEY CRÜE’s *Too Fast For Love* and *Shout At The Devil* were pivotal in shaping his musical taste. The raw energy and distinctive sound of these albums made a lasting impact on him, contrasting sharply with the more glam-oriented *Theatre Of Pain*, which he found less compelling.

Gray recounted how his musical upbringing was steeped in classic rock, courtesy of his young mother, who exposed him to artists like Peter Frampton, THE EAGLES, and LED ZEPPELIN. However, it was MÖTLEY CRÜE’s early work that struck a chord with him, particularly the riff in “Live Wire,” which he described as transformative.

As he explored heavier music, including METALLICA and SLAYER, Gray’s interest in MÖTLEY CRÜE waned, although he acknowledged the band’s significant contributions to the metal genre. He praised the talent of MÖTLEY CRÜE members, particularly Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars, the latter of whom he described as a phenomenal guitarist.

Gray also shared his thoughts on MÖTLEY CRÜE’s recent developments, including Mars’s retirement from touring and the band’s decision to continue with John 5. Gray expressed his disappointment with how the band has evolved, particularly because MÖTLEY CRÜE had been such a significant part of his life. He suggested that, unless the band is prepared to make a significant effort, it might be time for them to step back, acknowledging that while drummer Tommy Lee can still deliver, the changes in the band’s lineup and dynamics are hard to overlook.

Mars, who announced his retirement from touring in October 2022 due to health issues, remains a member of MÖTLEY CRÜE, but his recent legal dispute with the band over business holdings has further complicated the situation. Mars, whose contributions to the band’s classic hits are notable, continues to be a pivotal figure in the band’s history, even as the lineup changes and internal conflicts arise.
