In a recent video chat interview with Yahoo Entertainment promoting his new memoir, “The First 21: How I Became Nikki Sixx,” bassist Nikki Sixx shared insights into his early years, high school experiences, and how he eventually joined Mötley Crüe. He mentioned that much of his songwriting draws from personal experiences, with the theme of “Live Wire” being influenced by domestic abuse from his childhood. This, he noted, contributed to Vince Neil being the ideal vocalist for the band.
During the interview, Sixx compared Neil’s voice to that of Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Perry Farrell. He remarked, “With Mötley Crüe, Vince has this amazing, unique voice — sometimes like Robert Plant, Perry Farrell… they have these interesting voices that are… they’re not pitchy, they’re just raw and just kind of on top.”
Sixx emphasized that Neil’s distinctive voice is a key factor in the band’s successful composition process. “When we’re doing demos, I’ll sit in the studio with Tommy [Lee] and we will get it so that it sounds like this song… he delivers it, he owns it,” he said.
The interview highlighted Sixx’s deep appreciation for Neil’s voice, underscoring why it fits perfectly with Mötley Crüe’s iconic songs. The full interview can be watched below.
