Noodles: The Offspring Wasn’t ‘Professional’ Enough To Tour With Metallica

In a recent chat with Marcelo Vieira, The Offspring’s guitarist, Noodles, shed light on why the band declined a tour offer from Metallica in their early days.

“Yeah, I don’t remember everyone we turned down, but there’s nothing against Metallica,” Noodles clarified. “We love those guys—they’re a great band. Over the years, we’ve met them and even done shows together.”

He elaborated on the decision, explaining, “Back then, we didn’t feel like we were ready. We didn’t think we were good enough to open for a big arena band. We wanted to focus on improving ourselves before taking on something like that.”

Despite the missed opportunity, the bands crossed paths later in their careers. In 2013, The Offspring co-headlined Australia’s Soundwave Festival alongside Metallica and Linkin Park.

Interestingly, the two bands also share a connection through producer Bob Rock. During the making of The Offspring’s 2008 album, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace, Rock brought one of James Hetfield’s iconic Explorer guitars to the studio. “I remember messing around with that guitar,” Noodles told Guitar World in 2023. “It had that classic Hetfield rhythm tone—heavier than what we were used to. We added it here and there on some tracks, but it’s not very Offspring-sounding, so we didn’t use it extensively.”

The Offspring continues to push forward, releasing their latest album, Supercharged, on October 11, 2024. They are set to kick off 2025 with a performance in Los Angeles on January 11.
