Jacoby Shaddix, frontman of PAPA ROACH, marked a significant milestone today, celebrating 12 years of sobriety. Taking to social media, Shaddix shared his gratitude with fans: “Grateful… Today, Feb 19th, marks 12 years free from alcohol. I am humbled and grateful. Thanks to all the people that have supported me on this journey.”

Reflecting on the Struggles

In a 2020 interview with “Emo Nite Radio,” Shaddix opened up about how his rock and roll lifestyle spiraled out of control during the early 2000s, almost costing him everything.

“When we went on tour for [PAPA ROACH’s 2000 album] Infest, the alcoholic lifestyle completely took over,” he recalled. “We just wanted to rage, and we had people who co-signed it. I thought I was living in the ‘80s for a couple of years. It was full-tilt boogie.”

While Jacoby acknowledged some fun moments, he admitted they came at a steep cost. “It was the highest highs, but the lowest lows matched. I wasn’t a good guy. I had a good reputation, and I was nice to people, but I wasn’t good to myself, my wife, or those closest to me. I’d destroy hotels and act out. It was sad.”

On Sobriety

Today, staying sober is non-negotiable for Shaddix. “It’s way easier now,” he explained. “It’s not an option for me anymore. I’d rather put a gun in my mouth than put a drink in my mouth. I know that drink is a slow, miserable death. I have too much to live for — my music, creativity, spirituality, family, children, and my band. Those things fill me.”

A Slip During the Pandemic

Shaddix has been open about his recovery journey, including a setback during the pandemic. In an episode of the “Hardcore Humanism With Dr. Mike” podcast, he admitted to smoking marijuana during a tough period.

“I wasn’t working an active recovery program and found myself with a joint in my mouth,” he said. “Yes, it’s legal in California, but it’s not medicine for me. Mind-altering substances isolate me and hold me back from my potential. I got honest with my brothers in recovery and said, ‘I need help.’ They reminded me that I was heading towards drinking again.”

Breaking the Family Cycle

In a 2019 interview with Kerrang! magazine, Shaddix revealed that alcoholism had plagued his family for generations. “It’s destroyed lives and relationships,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to breaking the cycle and building a healthier future.

Jacoby Shaddix’s journey of recovery serves as an inspiring reminder of resilience and the power of community support. His honesty about the struggles and triumphs of sobriety continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
