David Gilmour has announced his upcoming album “Luck And Strange,” scheduled for release on September 6 via Sony Music. The album’s first track, “The Piper’s Call,” will debut this Thursday, April 25, following an exclusive premiere on BBC Radio 2’s “Breakfast Show.”
“Luck And Strange” was recorded over five months in Brighton and London, marking Gilmour’s first collection of new material in nine years. Produced by David and Charlie Andrew, renowned for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman, the album reflects a fresh approach. Gilmour shared his enthusiasm for working with Andrew: “We invited Charlie to the house, and he listened to some demos. He challenged ideas like ‘Why does there have to be a guitar solo there?’ and ‘Do they all fade out?’ He brings a refreshing lack of reverence for my past. His directness is invigorating, something I greatly appreciate.”
The album’s lyrics, predominantly penned by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s collaborator of three decades, explore themes of aging and mortality. Samson explained, “It’s written from the perspective of aging; mortality is a recurring theme.” Gilmour added, “During and after lockdown, Polly and I spent a lot of time contemplating these ideas.” Samson also praised Andrew’s approach, noting, “He wants to understand the songs’ meaning and ensures that every musician playing on them embodies the lyrical themes. I’ve particularly enjoyed this dynamic.”
