In a recent interview with Scott Lipps, Kerry King opened up about the wild early days of Pantera. Reflecting on his first encounter with the band, King recalled, “It must have been around the time of their Power Metal album [1988]. We were passing through Dallas, and they were playing a local venue, so we decided to check them out on our day off.”

King then shared a memorable experience from that day: “Somehow, they convinced me to get on stage with them. I thought, ‘Okay, we can make this work.’ I could tell they could play. We started jamming Raining Blood, but they didn’t tell me they’d changed the key or anything like that.”

“As the song went on, they suddenly shifted in a completely different direction. I’m just standing there thinking, ‘What the hell is going on?’ I had no idea what I was doing—I was just standing there, feeling completely lost,” he laughed.

Despite the chaos, King remained close with the band over the years. “I played with Pantera a ton, especially around the time Cowboys from Hell came out. They used to play at this place called Joe’s Garage, and I’d fly out to jam with them. We’d do Slayer, Priest, and Pantera songs…” King recalled. “When we played Pantera tracks, Dime and I would geek out on guitar, adding harmonies that weren’t on the record. It was a really fun time. I’d love to find those tapes if they’re out there somewhere.”

King also reflected on his favorite Pantera song in a 2012 interview with Revolver, stating, “That’s a tough choice, but I’d have to go with Becoming. That song just hits you, and you can’t help but turn the volume all the way up.”

Currently, Kerry King is on tour across North America with his solo band, with a show scheduled in Calgary, Canada, on January 22.
