In a recent interview with Chasta and Baby Huey on 107.7 The Bone, SYSTEM OF A DOWN frontman Serj Tankian discussed the potential fallout from his activism on his fanbase, referencing his 2021 documentary “Truth To Power,” which explores his journey as a politically active musician. He emphasized the importance of authenticity in art, stating, “Early on, you have to decide what role you want to play in this industry. If your goal is to maximize your fanbase and entertain, you might avoid controversial topics. But as an artist, honesty is crucial, even if it means losing some fans. It’s a part of the journey to remain true to yourself.”
When asked about the origins of his passion for activism, Tankian explained, “I was an activist before I became a musician. The truth has always been important to me, both personally and artistically.” He reflected on his experiences in the music industry, noting that he doesn’t take the celebrity aspect too seriously. “It’s nice to get reservations at restaurants, but that’s as far as it goes,” he said. “I value the genuine connections with fans, which is why I enjoy visiting my café and interacting with people directly.”
Tankian previously mentioned in an NPR interview that he accepts the risk of alienating some fans. “An artist isn’t supposed to please everyone; we’re here to convey truths about our times. If you can’t do that, you’re just an entertainer.” He acknowledged the tension between the music and the message, recognizing that while the other band members wanted to protect the music, delivering a necessary message was equally important to him.
Reflecting on his Armenian heritage and its impact on his activism, Tankian shared, “Growing up in a democracy where the truth is not recognized creates a sense of injustice. Learning about my grandparents’ history made me fight for truth and justice—not just for Armenians, but for broader human rights issues.”
His autobiography, “Down With The System,” released in May, delves into these themes. Known for his multifaceted career as a musician, activist, and artist, Tankian co-founded Axis Of Justice with Tom Morello to unite musicians and political organizations for social justice causes. He has also composed film scores and exhibited his artwork internationally.
Tankian continues to balance his artistic pursuits with his activism, living between Los Angeles and New Zealand with his family.
