Slipknot drummer Eloy Casagrande shared his thoughts on Sepultura’s new drummer, Greyson Nekrutman, during an interview with Modern Drummer magazine. Casagrande, who previously played with Sepultura, expressed admiration for Nekrutman’s skills and potential.
“Yes, and when I see him playing, I can remember myself in the same spot,” Casagrande said, reflecting on how he joined Sepultura at a similar age. “That’s quite interesting. He’s a very good drummer. I used to watch him playing videos he posted on social media when he was playing more jazz and drum solos. He’s a brilliant player, and I wish him and the rest of the band all the best. I have a lot of respect for him.”
Despite no longer being part of Sepultura, Casagrande maintains a connection to the band and Nekrutman. “I wish I could talk to him more one day. Maybe we could bring all the Sepultura drummers together,” he added, hinting at a potential reunion of drummers who have contributed to the band’s legacy.
Casagrande also shared a story about meeting Nekrutman after the latter joined Sepultura:
“Greyson came to my studio in São Paulo when he joined the band to do some rehearsals, and we had a very good talk. He had just two or three weeks to learn all the songs, so I gave him some advice like, ‘We used to play that song faster. Be careful with this song because we used to play it slower.’”
However, Casagrande clarified that he wasn’t instructing Nekrutman on how to play the songs. “I wasn’t teaching him how to play the songs because he can play anything he wants to play. He’s an incredible drummer.”
Casagrande’s transition to Slipknot occurred in late 2023 when he received a call from the band’s management. He joined Slipknot in February 2024, replacing Jay Weinberg for the band’s 25th-anniversary tour. This move required him to leave Sepultura just as the band prepared for their 40th-anniversary farewell tour.
Following Casagrande’s departure, Nekrutman was announced as Sepultura’s new drummer on February 27, 2024, via the band’s social media accounts. Fans have responded positively to the lineup change, with many praising Nekrutman’s drumming skills and energy.
Slipknot recently wrapped up the North American leg of their Here Comes The Pain tour, celebrating the 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. The addition of Casagrande has added a fresh dynamic to the band’s performances, further cementing his place in their legacy.
