In a recent conversation with Brazilian music journalist Igor Miranda, Courtney LaPlante, frontwoman of SPIRITBOX, delved into the band’s eagerly awaited sophomore album, Tsunami Sea, set for release on March 7, 2025, via Pale Chord in collaboration with Rise Records. Produced by Dan Braunstein and Mike Stringer, mixed by Zakk Cervini, and mastered by Ted Jensen, the album promises to mark a new chapter for the rising metal sensations.

When asked about her excitement for the release, Courtney shared:

“I wish it were dropping next week. I’m dying to perform these songs live for our fans. But March 7 gives us time to ensure as many people as possible hear them. It’s my job to champion these tracks and make their release meaningful.”

Discussing how Tsunami Sea compares to their previous works, including 2021’s groundbreaking Eternal Blue and 2023’s The Fear Of Fear EP, Courtney said:

“All our releases are connected. While we don’t market them as concept albums, they’re woven together thematically. Tsunami Sea builds on The Fear Of Fear but feels like the matured sister of Eternal Blue. It reflects where we are now—musicians living our dream lives, fully dedicated to creating. It’s a step forward, showing what we can accomplish with complete focus and confidence.”

The band’s momentum has been further amplified by their second Grammy nomination for “Best Metal Performance,” this time for the song Cellar Door, following their previous nod for Jaded. Courtney expressed pride in the recognition:

“I’m blown away. To see newer bands like us, Knocked Loose, and Poppy alongside legends like Gojira is incredible. Historically, this category has been dominated by legacy acts, so this feels groundbreaking. Plus, a woman has never won ‘Best Metal Performance’ since the award’s inception in 1989. With multiple women represented this year, including Poppy and even an opera singer featured on Gojira’s track, there’s real hope that this glass ceiling will finally shatter.”

SPIRITBOX’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric since their formation in 2017 in Victoria, British Columbia, by Courtney and guitarist Mike Stringer. The band’s 2020 breakout single Holy Roller catapulted them into the spotlight, and their debut album Eternal Blue redefined the boundaries of metal. Blending djent, post-metal, synth-pop, and cinematic elements, the album debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and solidified their status as one of the most innovative bands in the genre. A sold-out headlining tour and collaborations with Limp Bizkit, Ghost, and others further cemented their reputation.

The band’s prolific streak continued with the experimental EP Rotoscope in 2022 and The Fear Of Fear in 2023, which showcased their evolving sound and fearless creativity. High-profile collaborations, such as with dubstep artist Illenium on Shivering and rapper Megan Thee Stallion for a Cobra remix, underline their genre-defying appeal.

With Tsunami Sea on the horizon, SPIRITBOX is poised to push their artistry to even greater heights, solidifying their place at the forefront of modern metal while continuing to challenge conventions. Fans can expect a deeply personal and sonically ambitious journey when the album drops next spring.
