The music world mourns the loss of Manfred Schütz, a visionary leader and passionate advocate for independent music, who passed away on January 3, 2025, at the age of 74 after a prolonged illness. Schütz was a monumental figure in the industry, leaving a lasting legacy through his contributions to rock, metal, and electronic music.

Founder of SPV and Steamhammer

In 1984, Schütz founded SPV, establishing a platform that elevated independent artists and labels to international prominence. SPV became one of Europe’s largest independent music distributors, particularly influential in the metal and hard rock genres. Its sub-label, Steamhammer, named after Schütz’s favorite band, quickly became a powerhouse, releasing its first album, Common Times Heroes by HARDWARE, in 1984.

Steamhammer nurtured iconic acts such as SODOM, DESTRUCTION, and AXEL RUDI PELL, while licensing groundbreaking releases from bands like METAL CHURCH and TROUBLE. Over the years, the label became home to legends like MOTÖRHEAD, DIO, JUDAS PRIEST, and SAXON, continuing its legacy into the 2000s with artists like HELLOWEEN, KREATOR, and Doro.

Preserving Musical Heritage at MIG Music

After leaving SPV, Schütz founded MIG Music, where his dedication to preserving and re-releasing musical treasures earned admiration from fans worldwide. His deep musical knowledge and passion ensured the revival of many remarkable works, resonating with music lovers across generations.

Remembering a True Pioneer

Colleagues and friends have celebrated Schütz’s dedication, eccentricities, and warmth. MIG Music described him as not just a visionary but also a “dear friend” whose open-door policy and genuine care for his employees left a profound impact. Music journalist Ecki Stieg honored him as a “label boss of the ‘old school'” and a true connoisseur.

Under the management of Tanja Michaelis and Volker Pape, MIG Music will continue to honor Schütz’s legacy, ensuring his vision lives on.
