Legendary drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police recently took on a fun challenge in a new episode of Drumeo: attempting to play Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle)” after hearing it for the first time.
Copeland admitted he wasn’t familiar with the concept but had seen a video of Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) playing “The Kill” by 30 Seconds to Mars in a similar setting. Despite his unfamiliarity with “Rollin’,” Copeland quickly locked into the rhythm and showcased his adaptability. While playing, he joked about his drum setup, saying, “I would be playing the octobans more but I can’t remember where they are, and my aim isn’t great.”
During the session, Copeland shared a lighthearted story about his songwriting process and working with Sting in The Police. Reflecting on their creative dynamic, he said, “I only wished to please, and I wasn’t being obstinate or anything when I didn’t do what he asked—it was just because I forgot.” With his trademark humor, he added, “Every morning, I’d look in the mirror, with Fiona [Dent, his wife] saying, ‘Just give him what he wants.’ It didn’t last.”
After his first take on “Rollin’,” Copeland called it a “fun song” and expressed appreciation for Limp Bizkit. While not deeply familiar with their music, he was quick to praise drummer John Otto’s performance, enthusiastically saying, “Go John!”
In another Drumeo video, Copeland delves deeper into his career with The Police, discussing iconic hits like “Walking On The Moon” and “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.” He also reflects on his unique drumming style, his innovative use of electronics, and how he crafted some of the most memorable drum parts in rock history.
This episode highlights Copeland’s playful approach to drumming and his enduring passion for music, proving once again why he’s considered one of the greatest drummers of all time.
