Sum 41 has canceled their Australian tour due to frontman Deryck Whibley’s illness, marking another disappointment for fans as the band approaches the end of their career. News.com.au reported on December 5 that the announcement was made in a now-deleted Facebook post. The band wrote, “It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed. We were beyond excited to deliver this tour… and connect with our Aussie fans once more.”
The statement explained that, under the advice of Australian doctors, Whibley is “too unwell to perform.” The band acknowledged fans’ disappointment, adding, “We’re gutted too.” While unable to take part in the Good Things Festival this weekend, Sum 41 encouraged fans to attend and enjoy the event’s lineup of local and international acts.
This cancellation was particularly significant, as the Australian dates were set to close out Sum 41’s touring year and were part of their Setting Sum farewell tour. The tour supports their final album, Heaven :x: Hell, released in March 2024, with their last-ever performance scheduled for January 30, 2025. Australian fans have faced disappointment before, as Whibley’s health issues also led to the band canceling their appearance at the 2011 Soundwave Festival due to his hospitalization with pneumonia.
Despite Sum 41’s absence, the Good Things Festival will continue as planned in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. Co-headliners Korn will still lead the lineup alongside acts like Mastodon, Violent Femmes, Billy Corgan, Jet, and Slayer’s Kerry King. The festival kicks off on December 6 in Melbourne, with fans encouraged to send well wishes for Whibley’s recovery.
