THE HALO EFFECT/Ex-IN FLAMES Bassist PETER IWERS Is Open To Writing Autobiography: ‘I Have A Story To Tell’

In a recent conversation with Andrew McKaysmith on the Scars And Guitars podcast, Peter Iwers—former bassist for IN FLAMES and current member of THE HALO EFFECT—was asked about the possibility of writing an autobiography. Peter shared (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):

“A few years back, we released a book called An Odd Story. While it’s not exactly a biography, it does chronicle a unique journey shared by Daniel [Svensson, former IN FLAMES drummer and now part of THE HALO EFFECT] and me. It begins with our final performances with IN FLAMES and concludes with the first show of THE HALO EFFECT, capturing all the moments in between. The author spent a significant amount of time interviewing us individually and together, traveling with us, observing, and writing about what he experienced. That’s as far as I’ve ventured into this realm.”

Peter continued, “I haven’t been approached directly about a full autobiography, but I do have a story to tell. The challenge for me lies in tone—so many biographies seem to carry an undertone of bitterness, even if that’s not the intention. I find that unfortunate because I want to celebrate the life I’ve lived rather than come across as angry or resentful, which I’m not. Even the darker moments in my story should be shared with a sense of perspective and positivity. So yes, I’m open to the idea, but it has to be done right.”

He then praised Sammy Hagar’s autobiography, Red, as a standout example. “Sammy’s book is one of the best I’ve read. Even when he talks about mistakes or difficult moments, it’s laced with humor and self-awareness. He comes across as someone who has made peace with his past and cherishes his current relationships, especially with his kids. It’s inspiring.”

Peter also revealed that he’s already begun documenting pieces of his journey. “I’ve been jotting down bits and pieces throughout my years with IN FLAMES—little snippets and reflections. I even know how I’d start the book; I have the first chapter mapped out in my head. But writing requires a certain mindset. I’d need to immerse myself in those memories, step back in time, and dedicate the energy to really make it happen.”

Iwers departed from IN FLAMES in November 2016, announcing his decision to “pursue other endeavors.” Reflecting on his time with the band during a January 2021 appearance on the Vox&Hops podcast, he said:

“I cherished most of my years on the road with IN FLAMES. I miss the good times—playing shows, traveling to new places—but I have no regrets about leaving. These days, I’m focused on the freedom I have now. I own my time and can shape my days however I like. It’s a refreshing change.

“While reminiscing can be fun, it can also lead you down a path that’s not always healthy. I prefer to live in the present and enjoy what I have now, rather than get lost in nostalgia,” he added.
