Matt Walst of Three Days Grace likened his vocal style in their track “Mayday” to a mix of Marge Simpson and the Devil.
In a playful video shared on the band’s Instagram, drummer Neil Sanderson quizzed Walst about his unique sound. “How do you do that demonic voice, Matt?” Sanderson asked. Walst described it as a blend of techniques: “It’s not falsetto, and it’s not full voice—it’s somewhere in between. It’s new for me, something I haven’t used on records before. It’s like Marge Simpson meets the Devil [laughs]. At the start of the song, when it goes, ‘We’ll never say, we’ll never say MAYDAY,’ I’ve never done that before.”
Guitarist Barry Stock chimed in, “It sounds like you’re screaming your lungs out. Is it loud when you’re doing it?” Walst grinned, “Yeah, you don’t wanna hear it [laughs].”
“Mayday,” released on November 22, 2024, marked the first single from Three Days Grace’s latest album. Notably, the track features Adam Gontier, who rejoined the band in October 2024 after an 11-year absence, sharing vocal duties with Walst.
During an interview on Loudwire Nights in 2024, Walst opened up about Gontier’s return, revealing it had been in the works for over two years. “The band talked about it for about two-and-a-half years, initially without Adam, and then we finally got together to make it happen,” Walst said. When asked if it was awkward for his brother, bassist Brad Walst, to discuss the idea, Matt dismissed the notion. “Not at all,” he explained. “I even brought it up with Brad. I was like, ‘What if this happened?’ and he was all for it. Fast forward three years, and here we are.”
Three Days Grace has an exciting year ahead, joining Disturbed on their March 2025 tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Sickness. They’ll also take the stage at Sick New World Fest in April and Inkcarceration Festival in July.
