Tim Lambesis Reveals The Ultimatum As I Lay Dying Bandmates Gave Him Before Leaving The Band

Tim Lambesis, frontman of As I Lay Dying, has shed light on the circumstances leading to the departure of his bandmates and his struggles during that period. Speaking with Justin Wenzel, Lambesis discussed how his personal life, particularly his relationship with his wife Dany, and his anxiety contributed to tensions within the band.

Bottling Up Struggles

Reflecting on his mental health at the time, Lambesis admitted to suppressing his emotions to avoid external judgment. “I wasn’t going to talk about it because I didn’t want to let anybody know how deeply unhealthy things were,” he said. “I just kept it in, kept it in.”

The mounting pressure, however, became evident to those around him. “People are saying, ‘Tim’s acting less and less like himself. I’m concerned what is going on.’ I never yelled at anybody or argued, but from afar, they were like, ‘Dude, it feels like he’s falling apart.’”

The Band’s Ultimatum

Lambesis revealed that his bandmates gave him what he perceived as an ultimatum, urging him to resolve his personal issues. This, he says, only deepened his isolation. “The more I’m struggling, the more I isolate,” Lambesis confessed. He defended his former bandmates’ actions, noting, “It wasn’t to their discredit… but I got this sense of ultimatum. It was like, ‘Hey, whatever you’re going through, I can’t see that surface again, because if it does, I’m gone.’”

The irony, Lambesis pointed out, was that his relationship with Dany ended around the same time his bandmates decided to leave. “The solution occurred at the same time that they felt like they didn’t want to stick around because they felt like there was no solution,” he reflected.

Bandmates’ Departure

In October, longtime members Ryan Neff, Ken Susi, Nick Pierce, Phil Sgrosso, and tour manager Alex Kendrick exited the band, citing “concerning behavior.” Lambesis became the sole remaining member of As I Lay Dying at that time.

Lambesis acknowledged the challenges his behavior created during tours. “They’d just be like, ‘Where is Tim? He’s gone for hours.’ And I’m scratching my head thinking, how can I resolve this conflict?” He admitted that his desire to fix problems, coupled with codependent tendencies, made the situation even more complicated.

Moving Forward

While Lambesis didn’t delve into specifics about the band’s future, his revelations provide insight into the personal and professional struggles that contributed to the turmoil. His candidness underscores the toll mental health and unresolved conflict can take on relationships and creative endeavors.

With Lambesis left to shoulder the band’s legacy, it remains to be seen how As I Lay Dying will evolve after this dramatic chapter.
