Chad Gray, the lead singer of MUDVAYNE, recently shared his thoughts on the current PANTERA reunion featuring Philip Anselmo (vocals), Rex Brown (bass), Zakk Wylde (guitar), and Charlie Benante (drums). Gray, who played alongside Vinnie Paul Abbott in HELLYEAH for over a decade, expressed mixed feelings about the resurrection of PANTERA.

Gray recalled Vinnie Paul’s strong stance against any potential PANTERA reunion, emphasizing that Vinnie felt the band was finished after his brother, “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott, passed away. Vinnie was deeply committed to HELLYEAH, and Gray noted that Vinnie’s disinterest in reviving PANTERA was rooted in his respect and dedication to that project. For Vinnie, PANTERA’s legacy seemed to end with Darrell’s death.

Despite this, Gray acknowledged the excitement among PANTERA fans about the return of the band’s classic music. He recognized the nostalgic value and the emotional impact of hearing those iconic songs performed live again. However, Gray admitted it’s difficult for him to fully embrace the reunion because of his close personal connection to Vinnie and his understanding of Vinnie’s views on the matter.

Gray appreciated the skill and enthusiasm of Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante, acknowledging their significant talents and their genuine intentions in continuing PANTERA’s legacy. Nevertheless, he found it challenging to reconcile with the idea of PANTERA continuing without the original members, given the deep respect he holds for Vinnie and Darrell.

In contrast, Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown have expressed positivity about the reunion. On “The Metallica Report” podcast, Anselmo described the experience of performing the classic PANTERA songs as empowering and emotionally fulfilling. He contrasted the current, more relaxed approach to performing with the intense, combative mindset the band had in their earlier years. Both Anselmo and Brown spoke highly of Wylde and Benante, praising their contributions and their ability to honor Vinnie Paul’s legacy.

Anselmo remarked on how the new lineup allows him and Rex to enjoy the performances more, focusing on the music rather than the stress of their earlier touring days. Rex Brown also noted the striking resemblance between Benante’s drumming and Vinnie Paul’s, which has deeply moved him.

Overall, while Gray supports the intentions behind the reunion and respects the talents of the new members, he struggles with the idea of continuing PANTERA without Vinnie Paul and Darrell Abbott, who were integral to the band’s identity and success.
