Zacky Vengeance: Avenged Sevenfold Avoided Becoming The Next Metallica

In a recent interview with NME at Download 2024, Zacky Vengeance shared insights into how Avenged Sevenfold consciously chose to diverge from the path that might have made them the next Metallica.

The release of ‘Life Is But A Dream…’ last June marked a significant shift for the band, moving away from their signature metalcore sound to incorporate EDM and hip-hop influences. This bold change polarized their fanbase, but the band was determined to shake things up. Zacky explained:

“There was a moment in our career when we faced an identity crisis. People kept saying, ‘You’re going to be the next Metallica if you keep this up,’ and everyone had opinions on our direction. That didn’t sit well with any of us. Taking five years off to reflect, figure out what we truly wanted to achieve, and be ready to risk everything was the most liberating experience.”

He added:

“It was never about whether people would like it; we liked it. Initially, some didn’t understand our earlier albums either. To stay ahead, you’ve got to let people catch up to you. With this album, we set out to do exactly what we wanted.”

Reactions from Other Avenged Sevenfold Members on the Album

Following the release of ‘Life Is But A Dream…’ on June 2, 2023, the band faced mixed reviews. In an interview with Metal Hammer, guitarist Synyster Gates defended the album, saying:

“I’ve been using this analogy: both of my parents love The Beatles. My mom hates everything after ‘Sgt. Pepper’s,’ while my dad isn’t into the early stuff. They both respect The Beatles immensely, but it’s not all for them. For my mom, ‘Sgt. Pepper’s’ was the end of The Beatles, and for many, this album might seem like the end of Avenged Sevenfold. But for others, it’s the start of something new.”

Despite some negative reactions suggesting the band had lost their edge, the overall response from fans and critics has been positive. Gates acknowledged this in the interview, noting the strong support they’ve received from the press.
