On Thursday, May 16, country music’s brightest stars gathered in Frisco, Texas, for the 59th Annual ACM Awards. Hosted by the legendary Reba McEntire, the night was packed with powerhouse performances from Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, and many more. Reba even treated the crowd to her brand-new song, “I Can’t.”
In the weeks leading up to the show, fans speculated about what songs would be performed, but the details were kept under wraps until just days before. That’s when it was revealed that Jason Aldean would be paying tribute to his late friend, Toby Keith—a moment that quickly became one of the most emotional highlights of the evening.
Jason and Toby shared a special bond, especially in the last months of Toby’s life. In October, just four months before Toby passed away, Jason surprised his Oklahoma City crowd by bringing Toby on stage. “There’s only one guy you think of when you come to Oklahoma City. So make some noise for… Toby Keith!” Jason announced. The two sang “Should’ve Been A Cowboy” together, and Toby sounded as strong as ever—a memory made even more poignant by his passing a short time later.
When news broke of Toby’s death, Jason shared heartfelt words alongside photos from that October night, writing:
“Today is a sad day for Country music and its fans. Toby was a huge presence in our business and someone we all looked up to and respected. You and your music will be forever remembered, big man.”

At the ACM Awards, Jason chose that same song—“Should’ve Been A Cowboy”—to honor Toby. He slowed the tempo, adding the richness of a string quartet, while photos of Toby’s incredible career lit up the screens behind him. The performance was raw, heartfelt, and deeply moving.
In the audience, Toby’s wife Tricia, daughters Shelley and Krystal, and son Stelen were visibly emotional, wiping away tears during and after the song. It was the first time Tricia had appeared publicly with her children since Toby’s passing, making the moment even more meaningful.
After the show, the Covel family shared a message on Toby’s social media:
