Country music is mourning the loss of a legend—and for Blake Shelton, it’s personal.

Following the passing of country icon Toby Keith at age 62, Blake Shelton shared a raw and heartfelt message on social media. “Even though I knew about your battle these last few months, I still never imagined this day,” he wrote. “Anyone who knew you knows what I mean. You were the toughest man I ever met.”

Shelton, 47, went on to thank his longtime friend: “Thank you, brother, for being a friend, a hero, and an inspiration. There will never be another Toby Keith.”

Their bond ran deep. Toby once said he had known Blake “forever,” recalling how he gave the younger artist one of his earliest big breaks. “I took him out when I first got headliner status early on, and I was his first big tour,” Keith shared during the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards, where Shelton proudly presented him with the Country Icon Award.

Both Oklahoma natives, the two artists were more than tourmates—they were kindred spirits. “We have fun together,” Keith said. “We’re a lot alike.”

Toby’s passing has sent waves through the country music community, with tributes pouring in from stars like Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Jelly Roll, and more.

Reba McEntire, also an Oklahoma native, offered a moving reflection: “We’re going to miss him so much, not only as a friend but as a fellow performer. But he doesn’t have to fight anymore, and he doesn’t have to hurt anymore.” She added, “Thank God we have his music to keep us company.”

Fellow artist Chuck Wicks captured the feeling so many fans share: “Toby Keith was always bigger than life. That’s what people loved about him—this big, bold guy singing hit after hit.”

And for Blake Shelton—and millions of fans across the world—that legacy will never fade.
