Carrie Underwood is back where it all began—returning to American Idol as the show’s newest judge—and she tells Good Morning America it “feels like going home.”

“There are still so many people working on the show who were there when I was a contestant,” she shared. Underwood famously won Season 4 in 2005, launching her iconic career in country music.

Reflecting on her journey, she explained how her experience on the other side of the stage will guide her judging: “Being on both sides of the coin, I hope to offer insight, help, and a fresh perspective to the contestants.”

Underwood joked about one challenge she faces in her new role: honesty. “I just can’t lie—you can tell,” she admitted. “I plan to be honest, but I hope to be constructive and encouraging too.”

Fans (and future contestants) can breathe easy: the superstar mom of two promises she won’t be overly harsh. “Just ask my kids,” she laughed, referring to sons Isaiah, 9, and Jacob, 5, with husband Mike Fisher.

With her mix of experience, honesty, and warmth, Carrie Underwood is poised to bring a thoughtful and heartfelt perspective to American Idol.
