Some songs are meant to last a lifetime, and for George Strait, “I Cross My Heart” is one of them. Originally tried out by several artists, including Bette Midler, the ballad found its home with the King of Country in 1992. It quickly soared to No. 1 in the U.S., and over 30 years later, it remains one of Strait’s most beloved tracks—a favorite for engagements, weddings, and “first dances.” But for George, the song has always held a personal meaning, serving as a heartfelt dedication to his wife, Norma.

A Love Story from Texas

George and Norma Voss’s romance started in Pearsall, Texas, while they were still in high school—George at 19 and Norma at 17. They eloped shortly after graduation in 1971, tying the knot in Mexico before heading to Hawaii, where George was stationed with the U.S. Army. Their love story has now spanned over five decades, a testament to the enduring bond between the country legend and his lifelong partner.

A Special Celebration in Las Vegas

On December 4, 2021, the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in unforgettable style. George was performing at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas when he paused to honor the milestone. With his signature Texas drawl, he shared the story with the crowd:

“So I was 19 years old. And I knew this girl, Norma. She was 17, really hot. So we fell in love … We went to Mexico and eloped … 50 years ago today.”

The audience erupted in applause as George began singing “I Cross My Heart.” By the final note, he turned to Norma in the crowd, smiled, and said, “Happy anniversary.” Fans were moved, with one YouTube comment summing it up perfectly: “Watching the King of Country get choked up about his 50-year wedding anniversary is heartwarming.”

Still Breaking Records at 72

Even at 72, George Strait continues to make history. With more No. 1 hits than any other artist, countless CMA and ACM nominations and wins, and record-breaking performances, the Texas native shows no signs of slowing down. Recently, he played to 110,905 fans at Texas A&M University’s Kyle Field, surpassing the Grateful Dead’s legendary 1977 crowd of 107,019.

George Strait’s love for music—and for Norma—remains as strong as ever, proving that some songs aren’t just hits, they’re lifelong celebrations of love and legacy.
