When Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood first toyed with the idea of recording “Shallow”—the Oscar-winning hit made famous by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga—they weren’t sure it would even make the cut for Garth’s Fun album. But some songs (and some chemistry) are just too good to ignore.

What started as a spontaneous fan request during Garth’s Inside Studio G livestream quickly turned into something much bigger. Seven months later, “Shallow” wasn’t just a cover—it became his next radio single.

“I always thought Bradley Cooper and I had a lot in common,” Garth joked during an interview with Good Morning America. “Now I know it’s true.” He laughed, but he wasn’t wrong—like Cooper, he knows the secret to a great duet is having a powerhouse female vocalist by your side. “You just find an amazing female singer… and hang on,” he added, grinning at Trisha.

Originally featured in A Star Is Born, Shallow earned its place in pop culture after Cooper and Gaga’s unforgettable performance at the 2019 Oscars. Their intense chemistry sparked dating rumors and left audiences breathless. But Garth and Trisha brought their own brand of magic to the track—decades of love and harmony that only real-life soulmates can offer.

At first, Garth wasn’t sure the song would stick. But it didn’t fade away like others might. “Everything kind of lit up,” he told Robin Roberts. “But you know, in this business, everything kind of lights up and then goes away. This didn’t go away.”

And fans are glad it didn’t. Their version struck a chord, not only showing off their vocal strength but also reminding everyone why they’re considered country royalty.

Their rendition eventually found a home on Fun, Garth’s 2020 album packed with good vibes and high energy, much of which he credits to the electric atmosphere of his stadium tour. Alongside Shallow, the album also features crowd favorites like “Dive Bar” (a rowdy duet with Blake Shelton), “All Day Long,” “Stronger Than Me,” and “Party Gras.”

Garth and Trisha continue to prove that when it comes to music—and love—some duets are simply meant to be.
